To help support parents, families and caregivers throughout the construction at Willow River PS, we’ve prepared answers to a selection of frequently asked questions. We will continue to update this web page as information becomes available.
Construction Updates
We appreciate that parents, families and caregivers are eager to know when the building will be completed. While construction has been progressing well, some phases have taken longer than planned. We are grateful for your patience and flexibility as we work towards the final completion of Willow River Public School.
The following represents the current projected timeline: while work is progressing well, some dates may shift slightly as construction continues:
- October 2025
- All students will move into their classrooms inside the school building
- Portables will no longer be needed.
- November 2025
- The Childcare Centre, operated by YWCA KW, is scheduled to open on November 10, 2025.
- December 2025
- The gymnasium, stage, and music room will be ready for use.
- February 2026
- Students and staff will be able to access and occupy all areas on the second floor.
- March 2026
- Final details and touch-ups will be completed
Thank you to the Willow River students, parents, families, caregivers and staff for your ongoing support as we work through the final stages of construction.
Students currently in portables will transition into the main building as additional classrooms become available. By the end of October, all students are expected to move inside the school building.
Active construction zones are separated from student spaces by fencing and walls constructed specifically to separate construction areas, including outdoor play areas. Each morning before students arrive, the construction team conducts a site walkthrough and hazard assessment to ensure these boundaries remain secure and safe.
Grade 7 students will move to the second floor classrooms once that level is complete, currently projected for early Spring 2026. Lockers will be made available as soon as that space is ready.
Parents, families and caregivers have shared that lockers are an important milestone for middle-school students, and we will provide updates once the installation timeline is confirmed.
We recognize that this transition may be challenging for students, parents, families and caregivers. To support this, we have developed a comprehensive plan that prioritizes educational continuity and student well-being.
We are fully committed to providing the necessary resources to support the achievement and well-being of all students through this transition.
We are working with departments on our board to develop a mobile or temporary library model to ensure students continue to have access to books and literacy resources. We are also exploring additional options to support student learning and engagement until the library space is complete.
Our primary goal is to ensure student and staff safety. While the gym is under construction, physical education classes are taking place outdoors, weather permitting.
We are happy to share that the YWCA KW Childcare Centre at Willow River Public School will open on November 10, 2025.
