We are thrilled to announce that Willow River Public School will be open as planned on Wednesday, September 3, and ready to welcome our students for the start of the 2025-26 school year.

What To Expect

While some construction work will continue into the fall, we want to reassure students, staff and families that the school will be operational and prepared to support student learning for the first day of school. All necessary health and safety measures will be in place, and we’re committed to providing a smooth and positive start to the year for all students and staff.

To accommodate everyone during the final stages of construction:

  • Some classes will begin the year in temporary rooms and will move into their permanent classrooms as soon as they are available. The temporary accommodation is only expected to be necessary for the first few weeks of school.
  • Three portables will also be on site to ease classroom space while construction wraps up.

Childcare and Before & After School Programs

Although November was communicated as an opening date for both the childcare centre and before/after school programs, we are working closely with YWCA KW to achieve the goal of operating before/after school programs beginning in September.

We understand and recognize that all childcare services are important to families. We are doing everything possible in collaboration with the YWCA to ensure school age care is available in September. If we anticipate delays to the September 3rd opening date due to construction, we will keep families informed. There have been no changes to the anticipated opening date for the childcare centre (November 2025).

Next Steps

We want to reassure you that we are working to minimize the impact the final stages of construction will have on the Willow River learning environment. Our staff is dedicated to maintaining a positive, inclusive, and engaging school experience for all students.

We anticipate being able to provide a further update for families about next steps in the coming weeks. Any updates will be posted on the school website throughout the summer, including student drop-off, bus and parking information.
