Waterloo Region District School Board’s (WRDSB) newest school, Willow River Public School, has officially selected its mascot. We’re excited to welcome the Willow River Otter!

The mascot selection process began in December 2025, when the Grade 7 Mascot Team invited students, staff, and community members to put forward suggestions. The team received more than 100 unique submissions.

The students narrowed the list to eight top choices. After consulting with the school community, the team finalized the top three options: Otters, Ravens, and Wolves. Each of these animals was selected because they live in or near the Grand River.

In the weeks leading up to the vote, the Mascot Team launched creative campaigns to inform and engage the school community about each option. They also sold bracelets representing each mascot choice, with all proceeds supporting a school fundraiser..

A school-wide voting day was held on February 12. The Mascot Team set up official voting booths, created ballots with images for younger learners, and prepared ballot boxes to support the process.

After the vote, student scrutineers counted the ballots before announcing the Otter as the successful finalist.

The selection of the Otter marks an important milestone for Willow River Public School, symbolizing the beginning of a shared identity rooted in community, collaboration, and pride.
